The only reason it doesn't quite work so well for distributed teams is because you can't physically go there and move things around; you have to get a on-site proxy to do it for you.

Re: http://blog.celsopinto.com/post/14362844427

What about me, the remote developer? The system isn't suited for
small stores but setting up a wedding list web service that allows
small stores to add their products and makes recommendations on those
is a great implementation! It may even be possible to make money in
two ways: charging the soon to be married couple for the ability to
manage a list and charge a commission to the sellers per item sold.

Re: http://blog.celsopinto.com/post/5728926942

Tal, this system works best for customers that have multiple stores.
It needs to be setup at the customer's datacentre and it needs to
integrate with currently existing systems, such as the product stock
system you mention. I can imagine that the volume of data waiting to
be mined, at this type of client, must be equally interesting, if not
more given that there is a bunch of historical information that, even
tough it doesn't quite offer good recommendations must offer awesome
insights into what went on, back in the day :) (eg. customers who
purchased item A in the 80s were also interested in... :))

Re: http://blog.celsopinto.com/post/5728926942

It's been complicated :-( I'll be in touch offline ;-)

Re: http://blog.celsopinto.com/post/5728926942

Its all about the data, you're right. But how are you going to get all the inventory data from the mom-and-pop bookstores in the area? Assuming you could partner up with a major store chain, you could integrate that with the red laser-type software and it could be a huge hit with wedding registries, etc.

Re: http://blog.celsopinto.com/post/5728926942

One thing that you might want to consider: the amount of data that you'll need in order for the ML algo to work. One thing that makes the Amazon recommendations so powerful is the sheer amount of transactional data that they get from its buyers.

Are you going to cross reference purchases for similar items made in different stores? Will merchant allow that? Also, keep in mind that you'll need to know which items are available in each store so that the device won't recommend products that are out of stock.

for inm: maybe you can offer the system for free, but you charge commission on any up sale that were made through the system.

Re: http://blog.celsopinto.com/post/5728926942

Interesting idea. Getting into retail is such an amazing opportunity because of the sheer numbers of people and dollars that are involved. The issue is that with a web app, you only have to maintain 1 website and get people to visit it and buy your product. To reach out through retail channels and getting your system in stores requires such an amazing expenditure of capital, unfortunately. With the economy the way it is I think businesses would rather use lower cost social tools to reach out to people on Facebook and develop a large presence there with services such as http://facebook.popularfans... that can help you get more Facebook fans and traffic on your Facebook page. Your idea is certainly interesting though, and if you have some serious funding/connections, that this definitely an interesting idea to potentially pursue with some sort of physical, easily approachable, recommendation system.

Re: http://blog.celsopinto.com/post/5728926942

Remind me again why I still have that book with me?

Re: http://blog.celsopinto.com/post/3484425501

you're bloody right.
and don't even get me started on "full-screen apps" as a new feature ;)

cheers!
-tp

Re: http://blog.celsopinto.com/post/2677500117

LOL there is one implicit reference to it :-)

Re: http://blog.celsopinto.com/post/2677500117

you mean, until now right? :)

Re: http://blog.celsopinto.com/post/2677500117

I'm amazed how suck a long article about Kindle doesn't contain the word iPad!! :P

Re: http://blog.celsopinto.com/post/2677500117

It's not like it's a long step away from Amazon, they did bought this a couple of years (or so) ago

https://www.shelfari.com

:)

Re: http://blog.celsopinto.com/post/1332675616

Great post, keep them coming!
Most young entrepreneurs I know (like I once was) are always bitter-sad about their experience.
